I don't remember exactly what happened in the first few seconds after the explosion. I remember seeing Sherlock aiming the gun at the bomb, and then there was nothing for a few moments just bright light. I don't think I even heard the explosion. I guess I'd become used to them after my time in Afghanistan.
The next thing I know, I'm on my knees, heat blasting into me like I'm in the heart of the fiery Hell around me. Someone was beside me, arms around my chest, protecting me from the harshest of the blaze. It took me barely a second to realise who it was, but I couldn't speak my throat was dry and I felt that if I said the name aloud, it would make everything that much more real and unchangeable. I finally managed to stutter out his name through the lump in my throat that made it hard to breathe.
His fingers dug in at the sound of my voice, pulling me closer to him.
